Hiroshi Nagai, an illustrator who has been active on the front line since the 1970s.

The large sky, the city without people, and the seaside scenery are like stage equipment, expressing a nostalgic and refreshing summer atmosphere.

"At some point, my picture became a record jacket"

As it is said, starting with the jacket work of the immortal masterpiece "A LONG VACATION" (Eiichi Otaki), many of his works have been used in jackets and advertisements for music works, and have been widely popular.

Nagai has been drawing consistently since he was young, and it is a landscape with palm trees.

The existence of this palm tree is indispensable in works such as poolside, modernist houses, and night views, which are representative works. It is a unique technique that expresses the intensity of sunlight by drawing a dark shadow of palm trees, and Nagai himself says, "In my poolside paintings, palm trees always cast shadows."

The palm trees, sometimes quietly, sometimes blown by the wind, and produce the "West Coast" in the screen are iconic for Nagai's works.

In the production, we once again reconstructed the works of "West Coast Culture", which has now become commonplace, such as "surfing", "skateboarding", "jogging" and "drive-in", and focus on the landscape with palm trees (= Palm tree) This collection of works "Palm Street Songs" was edited and designed.

Using rough paper materials, we adopt a four-six-format size that is easy to carry with overseas paperbacks in mind. We laid out more than 70 Palm trees in an unprecedented volume of 160 pages in total.

Yoxxx, who has worked on many Nagai works, is in charge of the design.

あの頃の西海岸に思いを馳せ、ページから聴こえてくる""Summertune""
未発表作品を含む全70点が収録された、ポケットサイズの作品集が誕生!!

1970年代から第一線で活躍を続けるイラストレーター・永井博。
大きく取られ抜けのある空、人が存在しない都市や海辺の風景は、さながら舞台装置のようでもあり、ノスタルジックで爽やかな夏の雰囲気が表現されています。

“いつしか僕の絵がレコードジャケットになっていた”
と語られている通り、不朽の名盤「A LONG VACATION」(大滝詠一)のジャケットワークを始め、作品の多くは音楽作品のジャケットや広告などに用いられ、広く親しまれてきました。

そんな永井が、若い頃から一貫し描き続けてきたのが、ヤシの木のある風景です。
代表的作品であるプールサイド、モダニズム住宅、夜景といった作品の中にも、このヤシの木の存在は欠かすことができません。ヤシの木の影を濃く描くことで日差しの強さを表現する独特の技法によるもので、永井自身“僕のプールサイドの絵には、必ずヤシの木が影を落とす”と語ります。
時に静かに、時に風に吹かれて、画面の中に「西海岸」を演出するヤシの木は、永井作品にとってアイコニックなものとなっています。

製作にあたり「サーフィン」「スケートボード」「ジョギング」「ドライブイン」など、いまでは当たり前になった「西海岸カルチャー」の作品群をいま一度再構築し、ヤシの木(=Palm tree)のある風景を中心に編集・デザインをしたのがこのたびの作品集『Palm Street Songs』です。

ざらつきある紙材を用い海外のペーパーバックスを意識した、持ち運びも容易な四六判サイズを採用。総160ページというかつてないボリュームの中に、70点あまりのPalm treeをレイアウトしました。
デザインは、数多くの永井作品を手掛けてきたYoxxxが担当しています。
