KYOTO JAZZ SEXTET is a contemporary Japanese spiritual jazz and modal jazz unit launched in 2015 by Shuya Okino of the DJ and music production unit KYOTO JAZZ MASSIVE.
The classic track "Extra Freedom," originally included on their second album "Unity," released in 2017, is finally being released on vinyl as a 7-inch Vinyl Only Edit by DJ KOCO a.k.a. Shimokita.
Side A: Extra Freedom – DJ KOCO Edit
One of the standout tracks from the album and KYOTO JAZZ SEXTET's biggest hit, "Extra Freedom" beautifully combines a spiritual atmosphere with a mellow groove. For this edit, DJ KOCO boldly loops a section of the track's striking sax solo. While preserving the appeal of the original, he has reconstructed it as a 7-inch edit designed for DJ play, with a focus on creating a strong groove and making it easy to mix. The combination of the exhilarating effect created by the repeating saxophone phrase and the deep spiritual mood is exceptional. The edit is a powerful DJ KOCO interpretation that also evokes a tribute to Pharoah Sanders, whom Shuya Okino deeply admires.
Side B: You've Got to Have Freedom – DJ KAWASAKI Rework
A cover by KYOTO JAZZ SEXTET of Pharoah Sanders' classic "You've Got to Have Freedom," originally released on 12-inch vinyl in 2018. Based on the 12-inch version featuring Navasha Daya and saxophonist Tomoki Sanders, the son of Pharoah Sanders, this version brings Shuya Okino's long-held idea of creating a new version with a different drum pattern to life. The drums were newly performed by Soki Kimura (ex-Osaka Monaurail), with the rework handled by DJ KAWASAKI. Reconstructed around a drum groove distinct from the original, this is a special version created exclusively for this 7-inch release.
The jacket artwork was created by Yusuke Yoshinaga of Solla Inc., who has worked on numerous releases including those by KYOTO JAZZ MASSIVE. The Japanese title of the 7-inch Vinyl Only Edition, "Sarani Jiyu e," was written by Shuya Okino himself.
Classic spiritual jazz tracks created by KYOTO JAZZ SEXTET have been reconstructed for DJ-oriented 7-inch vinyl from the individual perspectives of DJ KOCO and DJ KAWASAKI. Both sides feature special edits and reworks created exclusively for this release, making this a limited 7-inch vinyl-only edition.
