【4】Ryo Fukui - In New York [Pure Vinyl](180g LP)
A touch filled with conviction, a swing with a firm core, and emotion seeping through its dynamism.
Landing in New York, Ryo Fukui approaches the essence of bebop with the rhythm section of his mentor Barry Harris.
Ryo Fukui passed away in 2016, leaving behind only five albums. This release is his fourth, recorded in 1999. Recorded in New York with Lyle Atkinson (bass) and Leroy Williams (drums), the rhythm section of Barry Harris, this album conveys every bit of Fukui’s appeal as a bebop pianist. The standard-focused selection and structure, and of course the playing itself, overflow with drive and determination. A heavy, assured touch, a swing that is both resilient and supple, and emotion and lyricism that surface within the dynamism―this is a raw, vivid sound that lets you feel Fukui’s breath and will. A re-performance of his signature piece “Mellow Dream” is another welcome highlight.
